Motivation

By Hilary Preece

I heard a story once, recounted by a motivational speaker, that goes like this:
There was a young man, who took to visiting his elderly neighbour. His neighbour always sat in the big arm chair on the left of the fire, with the dog a his feet, and he to the right. There they sat, putting the world to rights whilst the dog slept. The dog frequently howled in his sleep and at first the young man ignored it, but eventually he questioned, "why does the dog howl so terribly in his sleep, is he dreaming?"
The neighbour replied.
"He has sat in that same place since he was a pup. Over the years a floorboard has lifted, and now a nail is sticking into him."
"Why doesn't he move?" the young man asked.
"Because it doesn't hurt enough." came the response.

My partner has resently died. We had been together for two and a half years. Before I met him I had been on my own for ten years, since my husband had left me for the younger woman.
Before I met him I was unhappy, lonely, miserable enough to get drunk every night. Not miserable enough to find a solution.
Last week I went for the first blind date I have been to in my life. The man was incredibly boring and I only gave him an hour of my time. (You have to kiss a lot of frogs to find a prince) I have organized a meal with 6 single men and six single ladies. I advertised on a website. This insidentaly involved exchanging several emails with most of the men, all but one of whome I did not know. I have begun a mailing list for singles interested in future events. I actually had two men contact me after I had got my required six!!!!!!!!

I have a female friend with whom I can discuss the problems of life. Whilst my partner was alive we frequently had moaning sessions about our men. Her man is nice enough, too boring for me but he suits her. He is educated kind, I think the word amicable covers it, however he is poor. Now I don't want to be snobbish, but other people are, and she is from a very respectable middle class background. Her relationship with this man is seperate from the rest of her life. When I hinted that she should join the developing singles club, she said "I am comfortable the way things are".

I want to say, " sweetheart I love you very much, but this man is like an old dressingown, comefortablr but you wouldn't wear it to your mothers."

I recently wrote an article about graffiti, pointing out the link between deprived areas, poverty, uglyness and art, the desire to rise above deprivation and uglyness. I concluded that the human spirit needed evil to draw out the best in us. Do we also need pain?
