It all depends on your attitude

By Hilaryp Preece of Tranquility

I am recently bereaved, and being desperately lonely, decided to go on forums and see if there were any others out there with the same problem. As a result of this I started a group of singles, for mutual support and encouragement. The first person I talked to on the forum was a lady of about my own age who had also moved to France to start a business, but had found that she could not make a living here as self employed. She had got a job near Paris looking after an old lady. She lived with the family in their chateau. She hated the job.

I talked to her a little about making changes in ones life, looking for another job perhaps. She emailed me twice sometimes three times a day. She was “making it through”, each day was “an ordeal she didn’t need in her life”, she was “in purgatory”, and to each email I trued to make a positive comment. Eventually I got the email containing apparently the ultimate disaster. She had been made redundant.” Fantastic” I wrote, “This will give you the motivation to find something better for you.” The response to this was a group of emails complaining about how even more difficult her life was. She was “getting used to the idea that her life was a total disaster”. Working conditions were apparently, now even worse because her employers were embarrassed, family meal times were “torture”;

She recently became my “friend” on facebook.. She had posted an interesting quote. “Man is not disturbed by things that happen, rather by his own opinion of the things that happen.” I had to comment that this meant we only had to change our opinion then and situations would no longer be disturbing. The reply was that this was true, but that when the situation one finds oneself in is a total catastrophe it is hard to change ones attitude to it.

I find this level of negativity quite extraordinary, from someone who has made the big jump to start a new life as an expat in France. What I find even more difficult to take in is that she came here to start a business as a counsellor!!!!
