Dreamers of Moving to France

By Hilary Preece of Tranquility

We see them every year between Easter and the end of the summer. We call them “babes in the wood”.

I run a tea-house in Pontivy, central Brittany. I came here to get away from a job I hated, a boring social life, actually a barely existing social life, and over-baring parents. My son said “mum you’ll find this is the hardest thing you’ve ever done in your life”. He was, of course absolutely right.

Of course I knew they speak a different language in France, and drive on the wrong side of the road. It’s a different country; wrong it’s a different planet! What I did not realise was that body language is different, the sense of humour is different, regulations and paper-work is different, attitudes are different.

I was lucky in that I came to run a tea-shop and, although it has taken me four years to learn how to make it work, next year I will do fine, but to survive I have had to work for much of the year seven days a week, and in the summer twelve hours a day. As things get tough in England we will see more “babes in the wood” this year.

They come in for a cuppa, and to tell me, because they can’t find anyone else to tell, their wonderful idea. “We’re going to buy a big place, renovate it, convert it and do gites”, they tell me. They tell me as if this is a new, original, never been thought of before idea. They are all excited, radiant; I don’t like to burst their bubble but sometimes I do say, “perhaps you could research how many gites there are in the area and how they are doing. Mostly I know logic doesn’t come into their decision making so I wait till they are gone, sigh, and say “babes in the wood”.
